Output was flat in 2020

Solar power output rose only slightly in 2020, by 2.3 %, ending the year at 12.6 TWh, boosted by good sunlight conditions.
In May 2020, generation reached an all-time monthly high of 1.6 TWh. Since operations require less manpower than some other technologies, the health crisis had little impact on production at solar power plants.

10.39 GW of installed capacity

Installed solar capacity in France climbed above 10 GW in 2020, ending the year at 10,387 GW. Of this, 9,738 MW was connected to the grids of Enedis, LDCs and EDF-SEI for Corsica, and 649 MW to the transmission network. The increase in capacity relative to 2019 was 8.6 %. At 820 MW, the capacity added was in line with the average for recent years.

The Multiannual Energy Programme sets a target of lifting installed solar capacity to 20.1 GW by 2023. France is not on track to meet this goal, and will have to add 3.2 GW of capacity a year to catch up.
At the end of 2020, France was 50.9 % of the way toward the goal. The targets apply to mainland France, excluding Corsica.
