Wind power output rose, and became the third leading generation source, ahead of gas

Wind power generation rose 17.3 % year-on-year in 2020, driven by favourable weather conditions and an increase in installed capacity (6.7 %). Output notably reached an all-time monthly high of 5.8 TWh in February. Since operations require less manpower than other technologies, the health crisis had little impact on output. Annual wind generation exceeded that of gas-fired plants for the second time since 2014.

17.6 GW of installed capacity

As of 31 December 2020, installed wind power capacity in France stood at 17,616 MW, after 1,104.8 MW of new capacity was added during the year, representing a 6.7 % increase from 2019. The Multiannual Energy Programme set a target of lifting installed wind capacity to 24.1 GW by 2023, implying the addition of 2.2 GW per year. As of end-2020, France was 73 % of the way toward meeting that goal.
